SourceOffsite : overview

SourceOffSite® is a true client/server solution designed to provide quick and reliable access to a SourceSafe database from remote locations as well as non-Windows platforms. The SourceOffSite Client provides an interface that closely resembles Visual SourceSafe Explorer, allowing users to perform most SourceSafe operations via a familiar interface. SourceOffSite supports data encryption to ensure secure transfer of your data.

Windows Client

The SourceOffSite Client access to the SourceSafe database (via the Internet) is up to 12 times faster than the Visual SourceSafe Explorer 6.0 access due to SourceOffSite's architecture. Key components include:

How it all works

SourceOffSite consists of two parts: a Server and a Client. The Server is installed on the machine with direct access to the file system on which the SourceSafe database resides. Once installed, the Server provides access to SourceSafe operations to Clients that connect using any standard TCP/IP connection. The Server can be installed on any Windows 2000/2003/XP system. The Server runs as a Windows server service and is managed with a GUI server management tool.

The SourceOffSite Client can be installed on any Windows, Macintosh, Solaris, or Linux box with a TCP/IP or PPP connection. The Client is a GUI application that closely resembles the user interface of SourceSafe Explorer. SourceSafe users will find the SourceOffSite Client to be familiar and easy to use. Supported SourceSafe operations include:

Create Project Add Files Label Version
Delete Files/Project Get Latest Version Check Out
Check In Undo Check Out Share
Branch View Edit
Show Differences Show History Set Working Folder
Refresh File List

The SourceOffSite Client connects to the SourceOffSite Server by specifying the location of that server (by host name or IP address, and a port number).

The SourceOffSite Client and Server can communicate over any standard TCP/IP connection, including a PPP connection over a modem, an ISDN line, or an Ethernet connection on the same LAN as the Server. SourceOffSite does not require Windows Remote Access Service (RAS).
